“As a new band we’re sort of new but we’ve also got a lot of experience behind us too.” Bass Guitarist, Rob explained.

“ Gus has been in a few local bands already and our singer Jon has; Damon and I are from a band called Nekrofiest as well. We’ve all had experience before, it’s not like a complete new thing where we’re all learning straight off fresh…for me the exciting thing is that its happened so quickly. To think only, you know a few months ago we were still sort of jamming things out, and have come a long way in a short space of time.”

The band initially starting with Rob and guitarist Damon, they formed Carbon Black with the intentions of starting this new project with singer Jon who had helped them out in their previous band, and drummer Gus, who they met through a friend. Talking about their first rehearsal Rob revealed how extremely well it went, saying,

“Our first rehearsal just worked straight away; we walked out of there with a song and we were all just really excited. The good thing was, though despite we‘d never been in the same room together, it felt like we were all pulling in the same direction.”

“Yeah there was definitely a lot of electricity straight away, so we were all happy with it.” Gus added.

The guys from Carbon black also described their sound as not being categorized into one genre, but instead a mash-up of old and new metal. With not so much influencers, but more so inspirations, they revealed that their favourite bands were Pantera, Machine Head and Disturbed.

“This EP is our way of seeing our potential, looking at the songs that we’ve done to use as food for thought for what we’re going to do next, our strong points.” Gus explained. “We’ve looked to cater for a wide variety of listeners, it’s not just aimed at one genre.”

Their Debut EP, Principium, Latin for A New Beginning, is sure to have a deep raw vibe through the lyrics written by Jon, the band describing the tracks on the EP as lyrics to relate to, and as experience.

“Yeah there’s a lot of life experience.” Rob revealed.

“I guess a Metallica kind of way of writing songs, get a story told where two different people can interpret things and bring it together.” Damon also added.

“That’s the best kind of music.” Rob went onto explain,

“I think you want songs that are open to interpretation other than just being literal all the time, like ‘there was a guy who did this…’, there’s nothing much in that I think. It’s more substantial to have lyrics to a song that we can discuss. The first song that we wrote Jon sang the lyrics and I’d completely related it to myself.”

The interview finished with a laugh, as the guys from Carbon Black explained how they came up with the band name, relating it to the darkest drawing charcoal, which is called ‘Carbon Black’.

“It’s the color that metal heads black shirts go after twenty washes.”  Gus mused.

Laughing Rob added, “Shit grey colour…we should prewash all of our merch!”
