A rowdy night was had Saturday night 4th May when folk/blues band 19-Twenty put on an awesome show at the album launch for their new album Zion!

Playing at Bulli Heritage Hotel, 19- Twenty sold well over 160 tickets, making it a sold out show, as many dedicated fans couldn’t wait to hear their new music.

The place, filled with family, friends and fans crowded in front of the stage – dancing and singing to their favourite 19-Twenty songs like ‘2&4’ and enjoying new songs by the band, such ‘Zion,’ ‘Tick the Boxes,’ and ‘Y.O.L.O’ – which the band got the crowd to put their hands up to.

The guys from 19- Twenty: Kane Dennelly, Heath Dennelly, Syd Green and John Gwilliam had so much energy up on stage and were really well received by the fans to the point they were encored for three more songs!! Definitely a night to remember!

Talking to front man Kane Dennelly, he revealed all you need to know about the new album Zion, and what else is in store for 19- Twenty!

Your new album Zion is your third CD release; tell us about it.

It has been about six months in the making. After we realised we hadn’t released a full-length album for four years we decided it was well and truly about time!! We also needed to have a recorded product to reflect the change of sound in the band and also the change of personnel.

What do you like most about this new album?

The fact that every song is different to the next; we have a mix of hard hitting guitar driven rock songs, slow country (slim dusty style) songs and a few pop tunes in the mix. Some may see it as negative that they are all so different, however I describe it as follows: it’s like having ten different kids with the same mother however they all have different fathers! You can tell they are all from the same place. I am also so happy with the quality of recording and also how good it sounds! Syd Green really came through on this one. I feel so lucky to have such a talented chap to work with!

You produced Zion with producer Syd Green from Mono Nest Creative Suite, who is also the recent drummer for 19-Twenty. Tell us about the recording progress for the album.

We approached each song on its merits, one song per day. That way we could give each song what it needed, we would lay the drums down in the morning and by the afternoon we had most of the song down for vocals to be recorded! We did this for ten days and now we have an album!

What did you like most about recording Zion?

It was surprisingly easy! We had a lot of fun, giggled like schoolgirls and didn’t feel rushed or stressed! It was a great place to record, not to mention Syd’s super talented wife Elhi (who coincidently did the artwork for the album) would make us lunch every day.

Your album artwork for Zion is very unique; tell us about the artwork.

Elena Green designed the artwork for this album. It started out as a chalk sketch of my head and her creative mind and skills took it from there.

Tell us about the writing process for Zion.

Some of the songs for the album were written from my time doing a solo 8 month tour through Europe, whilst there is also a couple of co-written songs. Syd and I co-wrote a tongue in cheek rocky number called Y.O.L.O and I also co wrote a great song with super songwriter Jo Caseley. (jocaseley.com)

What’s your favourite song from Zion that you and the rest of the guys from 19-Twenty like jamming to?

I would have to say track ten, Y.O.L.O, as it is something completely new for us!

The name for the album, Zion is really cool. What does it represent and what inspired you to name the album this?

Well… It’s a wee religious actually. In a lot of religious texts there are references to ‘Zion’, in the bible Mt Zion, which is the ‘Mecca’ for some believers. I think this album is our ‘Mecca’ as its something we have been working towards (a musical pilgrimage) since the whole 19-Twenty shebang a bang started, as music is such a big part of our lives like religion is to some.  Ha you asked!!!

What can your fans expect from your new album?

Something very different from what we have done in the past. This is a very different collection of songs that will have sounds that our fans are used too, whilst also pushing into new territory! I hope they like it as much as we do!

What else is there in store for 19- Twenty, any other upcoming gigs for your fans to know about?

We have been asked to support the Radiators @ Shoalhaven Heads on the 8th June and you might just see us on television soon…
